Most days at the beach are just fun, sun and salty hair. But it’s still smart to know exactly what to do if you ever spot someone in trouble in the water, whether that’s a friend, a stranger, or even yourself. Knowing the plan means you can act fast and calm instead of freezing up, and fast and calm is exactly what helps.<\/p>

If you’re the one in trouble<\/strong><\/p>

Stay as calm as you can and don’t waste energy fighting the water. Put one arm straight up in the air and wave it, then shout or blow a whistle if you’ve got one. That’s the universal “I need help” signal, and it’s exactly what lifesavers are trained to watch for. Try to float rather than swim hard, floating saves your energy while help is on the way.<\/p>

If you spot someone else in trouble<\/strong><\/p>

The very first thing to do is find a lifesaver or lifeguard and tell them straight away, point at exactly where you saw the person and use your loudest, clearest voice. Lifesavers are trained for exactly this moment, so getting them involved fast is the single best thing you can do.<\/p>

If there’s no lifesaver anywhere close by, get an adult’s attention immediately, they can call 000 (that’s the number for police, ambulance or fire, anywhere in Australia) and say “someone is in trouble in the water” along with where you are.<\/p>

Here’s the big one: never jump in after someone yourself. It feels like the brave thing to do, but two people in trouble is worse than one, and a lot of rescues go wrong exactly this way. Instead, if there’s something nearby that floats, like a boogie board, a ball, or a foam noodle, throw it out toward them. Something to hold onto can make a huge difference while help is coming.<\/p>

A few things worth knowing before you ever need them<\/strong><\/p>

It helps to know where the nearest lifesaver tower or flags are as soon as you arrive at the beach, so you’re not searching for help in a hurry. The universal signal for “I need help” is one arm up, waving. And 000 is the number to know for any emergency, anywhere in Australia, whether you’re at the beach, at home, or anywhere else.<\/p>
